How A Stump Grinder Works
We use specialist equipment resulting in a clear area for replanting, paving or building. The stump grinder is a heavy-duty machine consisting of a large spinning cutting wheel or disk with steel teeth. The operator will position the grinder near the stump, ensuring that it is stable and securely in place.
If the tree stump is still relatively tall, the operator may use a chainsaw or other tools to trim it closer to the ground. This step helps to facilitate the grinding process and reduce the size of the stump.
The operator starts the stump grinder and positions the cutting wheel above the stump. The cutting wheel is then slowly lowered onto the stump, and the grinding process begins. The operator carefully moves the cutting wheel back and forth across the stump, gradually grinding it down.
A powerful machine equipped with a rotating disk and teeth will pulverise the tree stump well below ground level, leaving behind a fine mulch.
What is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of mechanically grinding down the remaining tree stump and root flare below ground level. Unlike digging a stump out (which can damage surrounding gardens and infrastructure), grinding is a faster, cleaner, and more cost-effective solution. Once completed, the area can be re-turfed, landscaped, or replanted.
Why Remove Tree Stumps?
Leaving an old stump behind might seem harmless at first, but it can lead to a range of problems over time. Stumps pose a tripping hazard, particularly for children and elderly visitors, and can become a magnet for pests like termites, ants, and other wood-boring insects. In some cases, the stump may even sprout suckers and begin to regrow.
Stump Grinding Vs. Stump Removal
When a stump has an extensive root system or sits where full removal is essential—such as before building works—contractors may bring in an excavator to lift the entire stump and major roots from the ground. This stump removal method clears the site completely but is more costly and only recommended in specific circumstances
3 Reasons to Remove a Tree Stump
Tree stumps roots are invasive
Tree roots can wrap around and crack water pipes and foundations, as well as lift pavement, and if a tree stump is covered by grass or weeds it can become a trip hazard.
It’s an eyesore
A lone, old tree stump in your yard can be unsightly, especially if there are weeds and other plants growing on it.
It takes up space
A stump can get in the way of you having a wide, clear yard, and removing it enables you to make space to expand your home or to landscape the area.
